Here’s a quick guide on passwords. It’s more of a guideline (we can’t say its a guaranteed security thing) – It is better than using your birthday as your password though.
- Think of a funny story/memorable moment that happened to you. Sum it up into three words and use those three words as your password. (via @Wired)
- Pick a phrase or date that is meaningful to you and create an acronym from it combining numbers and symbols (via @microsoft)
- The NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology) suggests a strong password is nothing less than 12 characters (via @infoworld)
- Replace some letters with numbers and symbols. Doing this alone won’t be helpful, but nowadays numbers, symbols and capitalization are almost always required.
- Your password-reset question is just as important as your password. If you can create your own, create one where you’ll know the answer but you couldn’t necessarily google the question, like a personal preference.
- Another method is to have one universal answer for different questions. “Yes, my favourite colour is WoodyWoodPecker” – the computer doesn’t know its not a colour, shhh..
- Research has shown, that it’s not always about the complexity of a password – but the length of the password, that makes it more difficult for hackers.
